Bannockburn

The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 was one of the most important events in Scottish history. A Scottish army completely slaughtered an English force three times larger, and thus secured independence for centuries. Up to 10,000 may have been killed, quite stunning numbers for that time. It was a grand victory, not just for Scotland, but also for that magnificent cowardly fuck, Robert the Bruce. Edward II, the English king at the time, barely escaped and went down in history not just as an incompetent eejit, but also a walking military disaster.

Nobody knows for certain where they fought, but the general area is known, and the Trust for Scotland has built a visitor center there. Possibly it's someways off, possibly it's right in the middle of it. They simply don't know. I went there today and gawped at the very well done tableaus and saw the introductory film and almost tried on the helmets and uniforms. Well, they looked way too big to be just for kids!
